7 Markets you must visit in Cape Town

Cape Town’s market scene is alive and thriving, with many great markets to explore in both the city centre and the surrounding areas. We’re here to tell you about some of our favourite markets you must visit while staying at Gardens Centre Holiday Apartments.

Neighbourgoods Market

The Neighbourgoods Market can be found at the Old Biscuit Mill every Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. The market has been around since 2006 and has a variety of vendors selling arts and crafts, food, and fresh produce. Dogs are welcome at this market, as long as they are on a leash. If you are in the Mother City during the week, you can head over to the Old Biscuit Mill to explore the permanent shops and restaurants they house; they are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market, or the OZCF market, is located at Granger Bay, near the V&A Waterfront. The Oranjezicht farm was established in 1709 in Cape Town but was swallowed up by urban expansion in the twentieth century. Now, OZCF is a non-profit project that celebrates local food, culture, and community. You can visit the farm from Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 14:00, while the market is open Saturday (08:15 – 14:00), Sunday (09:00 – 14:00), and Wednesdays in the summer (17:00 – 21:00). The market is stocked with fresh produce, delicious food from a variety of culinary cultures, arts and crafts, clothes, and fresh flowers.

Mojo Market

Located in the heart of Sea Point, Mojo Market has been a favourite for locals and tourists alike due to its 30+ food vendors and long opening hours. You can find the market open from 08:00 to 00:00 every day of the week and the stalls cover a wide range of culinary traditions. The market has 5 bars, with each dedicated to a specific beverage, live entertainment, and big screens for sporting events.

Blue Bird Garage Market

Blue Bird Garage Market captures the bohemian vibes of Muizenberg perfectly. The market takes place in an old postal plane hangar every Thursday and Friday between 16:00 and 22:00 throughout the year. Here you can find excellent cuisine, speciality cooks, fresh produce and craft groceries, books, clothes, jewellery, ceramics, and crafts. If you are looking for a drink, head over to either the Bicycle Bar or the Speakeasy!

Freedom Weekend Market

The Freedom Weekend Market takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 until 16:00 at the Freedom Village in Paarl. The market was created during lockdown in 2020, making it relatively new to the scene – it is not to be underestimated, however! The market has a variety of stalls covering all your food, crafts, homeware, clothing, and art needs. With live music, a buzzing bar, and entertainment for all ages, the market has quickly become a popular spot for market-lovers.

Lourensford Market

Lourensford Market is located near Somerset West and is the perfect spot for weekend visitors. In the summer the market is open Fridays from 17:00 – 21:00, Saturdays from 11:00 – 16:00, and Sundays from 10:00 – 15:00 and hosts around 60 stalls with food and drink, handmade wares, original artwork, artisanal produce, and fun activities. In the winter there is a smaller, cosier market at the same time on Fridays, and Saturdays and Sundays are from 10:00 to 15:00. The market is wheelchair-friendly and pet-friendly.

Boschendal Friday Night Market

Located in the Franschhoek region, Boschendal’s Friday Night Market is a worthwhile trip! Friday evenings in the summer are stocked with artisanal food and drinks, brilliant live music, and craft stalls. Open from 17:00 until 21:00, the market is weather dependent as it is set up in the open air under Boschendal’s historic oak trees, on the Werf.
